Fr James Mealy is a great advert for the priesthood.
He grew up in a pub (the Bear Tavern in Bearwood), was a manager with the coach company National Express, he was a cocktail waiter, a postman and worked in a fruit and veg shop.
The Trustees of the Johnson Fund have a lot to live up to. The Johnson Fund is named after Fr John Johnson who was a priest in eighteenth century. The records note that he was known as shy and timorous, but is also described as an incomparable good man, and was therefore given a lot of responsibility by his fellow clergy.
Seven new priests were ordained for the Archdiocese over the summer, the largest number for eight years, in what Archbishop Vincent Nichols called a ‘summer of exceptional grace’.

Archbishop Nichols received his Hon Degree from the Chancellor of the University, Sir Peter Williams, during an afternoon Degree Congregation held at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester on 8 July.
