One of Friends of the Holy Land’s more unusual work-creation projects, to make stoles for the deacons of the Birmingham Archdiocese, has just been completed, in time for a special Silver Jubilee celebration at St Chad’s Cathedral on Saturday 7 June. Maria Gavin of Birmingham City Council and Khalid Mohammed MP for Perry Barr gave high praise to the Communitas Wellbeing Project for the elderly at a Networking Event, attended by some 100 people in the Midlands Arts Centre on Monday 2 June.

On Tuesday 20 May, here at St Mary’s, we were blessed with a visit from Bishop Robert Byrne as he presided over the celebration of confirmation for some of the young people of our Parish.

Newman University continued its celebration of full university title with the appointment of Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor as Chancellor on Thursday 20 March. As formal head of the University, he takes on a largely ceremonial role and will carry out ambassadorial and representative duties for the university.

Since starting at the end of January as the new Birinus Youth Activities and Leadership Co-ordinator, I have been diligently working to organise a taster African and Caribbean dance workshop for young people aged 13 to 18 years old.

The deacons of the Archdiocese who have been ordained for less than three years met at Oscott College on 5 April for a day’s reflection on the opportunities available for the homily to bring the joy of the gospels to all those listening.

Twelve pupils reached the final of our SPG Master Chef judged by two Chefs from our catering company AIP and a very worried Headteacher who watched several episodes of Master Chef in the hope of picking up some tips!

Around seven young people aged between 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK.
