Viv shares about her thoughts and feelings of her big day: ‘We came through the gates of the Palace with the police on either side and people were looking through the railings and took photos of us in the car. It was very exciting and enjoyable. Buckingham Palace was fantastic, walking in and seeing the gold stairs. The paintings were out of this world and the ballroom was gorgeous.’ Viv explains that she was the first of the Civil Division’s MBEs and followed directly behind the military MBEs. ‘The soldier in front of me was really really nice, and talked to me. We had a nice little chat and spoke about my work at the Department of Work and Pensions and Job Centre Plus’.
‘The person who briefed us was really nice too. He told us what to do. He did a curtsey all the way down and I thought I can’t do that. When I got to the gentleman usher at the entrance he asked me if I could see my family but I couldn’t.’ Christine, Viv’s mum said; Shortly before 11.00 the band struck up ‘Men of Harlech’ and the Yeomen of the Guard entered. The Prince of Wales entered and the presentations began. Prince Charles appeared to enjoy an animated and smiling conversation with each one of the medal recipients.’ Viv said: ‘Prince Charles was so nice to me. He asked me where I lived and asked me about my customers. He then shook my hand, I did my courtesy and walked back to where I was told to stand. It was such a memorable day but by the time I got home I had a sore throat and my voice was croacky. I went to work the next day but went straight to bed when I got home!’
Christine said: ‘It was all so well organized and as if every eventuality had been catered for so that there was no possibility that anything would be allowed to go wrong. There were lots of staff unobtrusively around to watch and deal with any problem or difficulty. We were impressed by the attention to detail and the pleasantness and courtesy of everybody involved. We felt Prince Charles did such a great job in giving his full attention and for giving Viv a day she and we will always remember and treasure.’
